Infants & Children

Baby with hatThe birthing process may be one of the most traumatic events of our lives. Dr. Abraham Towbin, a Harvard University pathologist, found evidence of spinal injury as a result of the birthing process. He said this was due to “precipitous delivery techniques,” meaning excessive intervention both mechanically and physically. Modern obstetrics seem to emphasize speed of delivery rather than safety of delivery.  These methods can stress an infant’s spine causing iatrogenic subluxation.  This spinal stress can irritate the nervous system causing a variety of newborn health complaints.Because we don’t commonly associate neck problems with seemingly far removed conditions like asthma, insomnia, excessive crying, loss of appetite, hyperactivity, and ear infection, the cause often goes undetected.

It is a good idea to have your children checked for nerve interference due to subluxation, whether they have outer symptoms or not. If they have symptoms that are not responding to current treatment, a visit to a chiropractor should receive high priority. It’s a fact that many spinal problems in adults begin in childhood. All infants should be checked for subluxation.  If neglected, the bumps and falls may lead to serious spinal problems later in life.

Autism

AutismI’m frequently asked my opinion on the causes of Autism. If you are reading this, you are probably painfully aware of how controversial this topic is. Most of the controversy is centered around vaccination.

As a physician, I try to look for the “obvious” cause first. I find it amazing how often the “obvious” is overlooked. You know the saying, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck. It’s probably a duck. The component in the vaccine that is the most controversial, is Thimerosal, which is a mercury compound. What do we know about mercury? Mercury is a “known” neurotoxin. Meaning it is toxic to the nervous system. This cannot be good for an infant’s developing brain and nervous system.

I always advise new parents to ask a lot of questions when contemplating vaccinating their children. Here are three “extremely” important ones:

  1. If my child is vaccinated, can they still contract the illness or disease they are being vaccinated against?
  2. If my child is vaccinated, can the vaccine possibly cause neurological damage?
  3. If my child is vaccinated, could he or she become deathly ill?

If you have an Autistic child, you now realize the importance of the above questions. If you are a new parent, it is your obligation to become informed. Your child is voiceless in this matter.

Childhood Headaches

headache-child.bmpThe Causes of Childhood Headaches

There are many causes for childhood headaches. However, research clearly demonstrates that the majority of headaches are caused by problems in the cervical spine or neck. Did you know that the vertebrae in the neck can become misaligned? When this happens, nerves and at times the spinal cord itself can become irritated causing muscular tension and changes in blood flow to and in the brain itself. Unfortunately, many parents turn to drugs, which of course do nothing to correct the problem they only masks the symptoms.

Childhood headaches do more than cause pain

Researchers found headaches can affect children’s emotional development and school performance more than some other more serious health problems. The study published in the July issue of Pediatrics, suggests that headaches have a significant impact on children’s overall quality of life.

The children with headaches were adversely affected in all areas of functioning, including school performance, emotional development and physical health. In particular, children with migraines reported a higher level of impairment in school and emotional functioning than children with other chronic diseases.

If your child is suffering with headaches, seek and treat the “cause” don’t just continue treating the symptom.

Chronic Ear Infections

Ear infections are seen most often in children 6 to 36 months of age. What’s so frustrating is up to a third of these children will have six or more episodes before starting school. Some children can have up to twelve episodes in one year.  Ear infections are not only stressful for the child but also for the parents, due to worry and loss of sleep.

Did you know?

Each year in the United States, approximately 30% of children under the age of three receive antibiotics as a treatment for acute earaches. Treating earaches actually is the most common reason for outpatient use of antibiotics. Scientific studies have shown little evidence of shorter duration of symptoms, fewer recurrences or better long term out-comes. Researchers have actually found that giving so many children so much antibiotic medication poses a serious risk to the children and their community. It promotes the emergence of strains of microbes that are resistant to the very antibiotics that are being used.

Can Chiropractic Help?

A chiropractic treatment plan of gentle adjustments, offers hope for comforting relief without recourse to heavy use of antibiotics or surgery for the placement of tubes. The chiropractic approach is an alternative to traditional medical treatments that may be less effective and involve serious side effects.

Isn’t it time you try a more natural approach? If you answered yes, call me.

Recovering from Autism

Autism, is historically defined as a neurological condition that impairs communication and socialization skills in varying degrees of severity, is stealing away children in frightening numbers. An estimated 1 in 150 children are being diagnosed with this serious medical condition that the American Academy of Pediatrics now considers “epidemic”.

When given this diagnosis, parents are confronted with a plethora of options. Many of the options are based on their pediatrician’s understanding of the disorder and belief in the “possibility” of recovery. The good news is, some children do recover. Each child seems to have to find his or her own road. Remember, all journeys begin with a single step. Below is a short video clip taken from a Documentary titled “Finding the Words.” I hope you will find it both Inspiring and Educational.
