Hormone Boosts Effects of Exercise

Hormones aren’t just for sex—they help control everything from the times when we feel hungry to the timing of our heart beats. Dozens have been described, but there is now a new one on the scene. It might help explain some of the health benefits of exercise and point the way to preventing obesity and diabetes. The find was described online Wednesday in Nature (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group).

Exercise has myriad benefits for the body and brain, but many of the triggers for these improvements have so far been somewhat of a mystery.

“There has been a feeling in the field that exercise ‘talks to’ various tissues in the body,” Bruce Spiegelman, a cell biologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and co-author of the new study, said in a prepared statement. “But the question has been, how?”

Speigelman and his colleagues found that exercise—in both mice and humans—starts a cascade of signaling changes, including the production of a never-before-described hormone. They dubbed the new hormone irisin, as a nod to the Greek messenger goddess Iris for its ability to send information to surrounding body tissue.

And the messages irisin carries are not trivial—they seem to effect positive changes in the body. An increase in irisin helps turn white fat into the more beneficial and metabolically active brown fat, which burns more calories. It also seems to make the body more sensitive to glucose, an important capability for keeping diabetes at bay.

In the study, the researchers discovered that exercise increases the body’s production of a metabolism-regulating protein, which in turn stimulates expression of a protein that can produce the new hormone, found to reside in the outer membranes of muscle cells.

The effects of exercise on the hormone’s production seem to be long-lived. Even after 12 hours of rest, mice that had been on a three-week jogging regimen had 65 percent more irisin in their blood than unexercised mice. And people who had gotten 10 weeks of endurance exercise training had double the amount of irisin in their blood than those who had not.

But could this hormone, the scientists wondered, mimic some of the effects of exercise—without subjects having to hit the treadmill? To find out, they injected a batch of obese, pre-diabetic mice that had been fed a high-fat diet with just about as much of an irisin boost as they would get from a workout. After 10 days of injections, the irisin-boosted mice had shed a little weight and become more sensitive to glucose—all without exercise. And a later dissection showed that the hormone spike didn’t seem to have any negative biological effects.

“It is likely that irisin is responsible for at least some of the beneficial effects of exercise on the browning of adipose tissues and increase in energy expenditure,” Speigelman and his colleagues noted in their paper. This find might help explain some of the “afterburn” of extra calories after vigorous activity.

Even if the hormone proves safe for humans to take as a supplement, it won’t replace all the benefits of going to the gym. But it might help people fight obesity and remain more sensitive to glucose, thus fighting off diabetes.

“It’s exciting to find a natural substance connected to exercise that has such clear therapeutic potential,” Pontus Bostrom, a postdoctoral researcher at Dana Farber and co-author on the new paper, said in a prepared statement. The researchers are now also investigating possible effects of the exercise-based hormone on other diseases, including neurodegenerative conditions, and have licensed the finding to Ember Therapeutics (a company co-founded by Spiegelman) for drug development.

Chiropractic a Logical Choice

Structure & Function are Inseparable

Chiropractic is a conservative health care system that emphasizes keeping the body’s structure in proper balance.  It deals with the whole person, and treats the cause of the problem rather than just the symptom.  In addition to restoring health and increasing resistance to disease, Chiropractic helps you maintain good health.

The Body’s Information Highway

brains-super-hwy.jpgThe brain, vertebrae and nerves that make up the spinal column are an integral part of the central nervous system. In simple terms, the messages sent from the brain travel along the nerves in the the spinal column to all parts of your body.  Some of the messages require no conscious effort on your part like breathing or keeping your heart beating.  Others, like driving your car, do take conscious effort. They all however, use the spinal column which acts like an Information Super Highway to route the messages to the proper destination.  If these messages get obstructed, problems develop. The obstruction, alters the messages which leads to improper function of some body part or organ.  Improper function ultimately leads to pain, illness and disease.

Common Sense Health Strategy #1

Common Sense… Is Not So Common

I find that the majority of people know very little about maintaining a healthy body. In fact, most people only become interested when they become ill or develop a disease.

Sad to say most people are oblivious to the concept of a health strategy. Partly due to ignorance, laziness and the insidious nature of a health care industry that is driven by selling more and more drugs to people that have been brainwashed into thinking that both health and disease come from the outside. We have always been taught that germs are out to get us and if they do, there is a drug for it. I’m here to tell you, there is another way, a natural more holistic way.

This is the first of several posts that I’m going to write, titled Common Sense Health Strategies. So let us begin learning how your body works and how to make it work better.

Your body is a High Performance Machine

What makes it such a high performance machine is its ability to rapidly respond to both internal and external stimuli. This rapid response is made possible due to your brain and nervous system. A truly Amazing Duo!

Did you know your nervous system was the “first” system in your body to be formed, after you were conceived? This irrefutable fact is a clue to your nervous system’s importance. Did you know your nervous system controls “everything” in your body? Essentially, your nervous system is an information super highway. The brain sends information to the body parts and then, the body parts send information back to the brain. This amazing feedback loop allows constant monitoring of all the systems of your body. This is why problems in the nervous system can create serious health problems. Because of this fact, your spine should be the first thing checked when you are not feeling well and regularly maintained to keep you well.

Fact: In the body information is Health! Lack of information is Disease!

Your spine is made up of many segments called vertebrae. The vertebrae are stacked on top of one another. Your spine acts like a support structure for your upper body, it also houses and protects your spinal cord and it allows you bend and twist. On occasion these segments can lose their proper alignment or relationship with on another. When this happens, the nerves exiting the spine can become pinched causing a disruption in the communication between the brain and the affected body part(s). If this communication is not restored the body’s level of functioning is reduced. This reduction in functioning can predispose you to illness, pain and disease.

Strategy #1 “Spinal Hygiene”

Keeping your spine in proper alignment by having it checked and if needed, having it adjusted. Did you know your current level of health is in direct proportion to the level of communication that currently exists between your brain and your body. This simple fact has eluded the masses with the exception of elite athletes and those who seek optimal health.

Sadly many people deal with health problems by simply drugging the symptom. Drugging the symptom however, never corrects the cause it merely allows it to get worse. This is why I say common sense is not so common.

Have you had your spine checked recently? Do you know that is suffering, if so, please share this post with them.
