The Importance of Proper Foot Care

Did you know there are times when your feet and ankles need to be adjusted?  Yes, misalignments and fixations can and do occur in your feet.  Far too often foot pain is ignored as simply being tired feet.

Your feet are a very unique, dynamic and complex structures. Each foot contains 26 bones and 33 joints. Together the feet make up more than 1/4 of all the bones in your body.

The average person will take between 8000 to 10,000 steps per day and cover approximately 115,000 miles in a lifetime.  Walking is a natural activity and should not cause discomfort.

Even if your feet do not hurt, an underlying foot problem can cause discomfort or pain in your leg, hip, back and neck due to structural compensations. What exactly do I mean by structural compensations? By design your feet are the foundation of your body.  So how can foot problems cause a headache or neck pain?

Have you ever noticed how a foundation problem in a house can cause cracks to form in the walls or cause doors and windows to not open properly?  This happens because the house is actually shifting or “compensating” due to the changes in the foundation.  Your body actually will do the same thing.  In your body, the muscles, ligaments and skeletal structures will shift to overcome the stresses that originate in your feet. It is this shifting that ultimately leads to soft tissue swelling and pain in other areas of your body.

Is Your Current Health Care… Green?

I find it amazing that so many people try to positively impact the environment, yet they totally ignore their own bodies.  Yes, they drive a Prius and separate their garbage, yet they still pop their pills in an attempt to quite their ever-failing-physiology. (I’m here to tell you there is NOTHING ORGANIC, GREEN or NATURAL about that.)  These same people have been on their local pharmacies frequent flyer program for years.  Now they can modulate both their physiology and psychology by simply swallowing a pill.  Hey, the copay is only ten bucks a month.  What a deal!

Is there a Greener Way?

Meaning, nothing added and nothing taken away.  Essentially allowing Nature to Nurture. This is truly a foreign concept to Western Health Care.  It seems we have been programmed, ( yes, we have “all” been programmed ) from the womb to the tomb that the answer to any and all health issues, comes in the form of a syrup, powder or pill. There is a cabinet specifically designed to hold these concoctions… You guessed it, a Medicine Cabinet. How’s that for cultural indoctrination?

Did you know that your body was preloaded with software at conception? Hard to believe isn’t it? This is no ordinary software. The software that runs your body is absolutely amazing, it allows you to learn both consciously and unconsciously.  It runs both your physiology and your thinking.  It will quickly make you remove your hand from a hot surface and cause a scab to form if you cut yourself.  In a nutshell, your brain has been programmed with all the information it will need to allow you to be healthy for your entire life.

Illness, in many instances, is simply a manifestation of Improper Communication.

Your brain, your body’s onboard computer, constantly oversees “every” function in your body. (Most people are unaware of this.)  It does this via nerves that travel from the brain down the spinal column and then out into the body to cells, tissues and organs.  This lightning fast communication creates a symphony in your body, called HEALTH! Conversely, lack of this communication will cause a downward spiral of function leading to illness, pain and disease.

By design, your spine allows a variety of movements. You can touch your toes, reach for the ceiling or hit a golf ball. Amazing, huh?  At times however, for a variety of reasons, the spinal segments can become misplaced causing tissues to become inflamed.  If these inflamed tissues press on the nerves that exit the spinal column, the information traveling in those nerves gets garbled causing a loss of function.  This loss of function can lead to pain, numbness, spasms, stomach problems, headaches, high blood pressure, insomnia and lowered resistance just to name a few.

Walking a Great Exercise

walking-rover.jpg Of all the fitness fads that have come and gone in the last few years, walking has continued to be popular and is one of the easiest to work into a busy schedule. It takes no special equipment, no special clothes or a special location. A pair of comfortable shoes and socks as well as some comfortable clothing are all that you need to obtain the greatest benefits from your walks.

Any amount of time spent walking will be beneficial, three to five hours a week devoted to it will give important benefits in several fitness categories.

Weight Loss

Walking is just as good as jogging per mile of exercise and total mileage, not speed, is the goal. It can be fast or slow to burn calories and it avoids the high impact problems for the obese. Although a reduced calorie diet is essential for most weight-loss programs, diet without exercise makes you lose muscle mass as well as fat. Your body reacts by increasing your appetite and as soon as you go off the diet you will eat more than you did before. Walking acts like a suppressant to your appetite. An ideal goal is 14 to 21 miles per week.

Aerobic Benefits

To improve cardiovascular fitness, brisk walking (3.5 to 6 miles per hour) is needed for 20 minute, 2 to 4 times per week. This kind of walking forces the heart to carry a higher-than-normal load, pushing it up to 60-70 percent of it’s maximum rate.

Cholesterol

Regular walking seems to increase the body’s level of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL), which in turn carries the dangerous Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) out of the arteries. This benefit decreases your risk of atherosclerosis, thus lowering the risk of heart disease.

In simple terms, the messages sent from the brain travel along the nerves in the the spinal column to all parts of your body.  Some of the messages require no conscious effort on your part like breathing or keeping your heart beating.  Others, like driving your car, do take conscious effort. They all however, use the spinal column which acts like an Information Super Highway to route the messages to the proper destination.  If these messages get obstructed, problems develop. The obstruction, alters the messages which leads to improper function of some body part or organ.  Improper function ultimately leads to pain, illness and disease.
